Bread Ornaments with Glitter

Bread Ornaments w/ Glitter

Years ago our family started a tradition of decorating our Christmas Tree with only homemade ornaments & items.  Well, these Bread Ornaments were by far our favorite to make!  It has been 10+ years since we first made them (yes, they last for years) and every time we hang them we have such fond memories of making them together!  Not only do they last for years, they are also easy to make and light-weight.  No one would ever guess these Sparkling Ornaments are made with White Bread, Elmer’s Glue, and Glitter!  Hope your family enjoys this ornament idea as much as our family has.

Directions for Making Glitter Bread Ornaments:

1)  Select cookie cutter and press firmly in center of bread.  Press on the edges of the cookie cutter for a clean cut.  We tried both inexpensive white bread (that we won’t let our kids eat) and texas toast (thicker bread).  Both will work, however, we prefer plain white bread.  It cost less too!

2)  Once the shape is cut, use a drinking straw make a hole at the top of the bread ornament.

3)  Bread Ornaments must be dried before applying glue and glitter.  Arrange all bread ornaments on a baking sheet and bake at 200 degrees for 10-15 mins per side.  Let cool.  These won’t look very pretty at this point…

4)  Add Elmer’s Glue to a small bowl and mix in a few drops of water to make it easier to spread on bread.  We filled the bottom of a small bowl with glue and added about 1 tsp of water.  Mix well.

5)  With a 1″ Foam Brush cover the top of the bread ornament with glue.

6)  Fold a piece of copy paper in half for every color of glitter.  This will help with getting the glitter back into the bottle.  Place the ornament on the folded seam and cover with glitter.  Shake off excess glitter and place ornament on wax paper to dry.

        7)  Once top is completely dry, brush back of ornament with glue and apply glitter.  You can also brush sides with glue and add glitter but we found it easier to wait until the top & bottom are dry.  Touch-ups are easy with a small paint brush & a quick shake of glitter.

 8)  Cut a 10″ piece of 1/4″ Sheer Ribbon in the color of your choice.  Loop through hole and tie ends.  Use a Plastic Needle or paperclip to help thread ribbon if necessary.  That’s it!  Enjoy~
